Children of Service parents often suffer disruption in their education due to the frequency of postings. This leads them to under-perform. The Duke of York's understands this and provides the continuity required for academic excellence within the context of a happy, stable learning environment. With a teacher:pupil ratio 1:10 the school is small enough to cater for individual needs. It follows National Curriculum provision as a minimum requirement. Examination results in GCSE, GCE 'A' Level and vocational courses are excellent. All members of the Sixth Form also study at least one European language and work-experience in the UK and on the Continent is developing strongly.
The ethos is Christian in nature and the school successfully promotes hard work, good manners and politeness. A warm family atmosphere prevails throughout and teamwork is encouraged. There is a wide variety of hobby and sporting activities. The 150 acre site is well resourced and accommodation is of a very high quality. It is conveniently situated in Dover, with good communications to locations in the UK and the continent. This is a selective, conventional co-educational boarding school for 11 to 18 year old pupils who are the children of Service personnel. Parents may be serving or retired but they must have a minimum of four years service in Her Majesty's Armed Forces. Selection is on the basis of examinations in English and Mathematics and a Headteacher's report. Boarding school allowance cannot be claimed but the fees of รบ275 per term represent remarkable value. Moreover the pupil's place is not threatened if parental Service ceases.
